Composite Dome
2012-2018
The Domes are one of the main architectural features found in the Shamiya expansion that make this project stand out.
The Ceremonial Dome is the largest dome found in the holy mosque with a diameter of 36 meters. Besides being a key feature in the holy mosque, the dome has other special attributes that are essential to the project. The dome has a one-of-a-kind mechanism with advanced technology that allows this massive structure to move. It can be moved to a designated parking position over the roof deck for natural ventilation of the Mosque when necessary, or automatically opened for smoke evacuation during emergency situations. The roof is supported on its four corners by bogies with four wheels each. It moves on two rails along each side over a length of approximately 50 meters.
The interior shell, formed as a two-step spherical dome, is built from glass fiber reinforced panels, which are decorated with ornamental design in the Islamic tradition. The outer shell is made up of composite panels built as glass fiber epoxy laminate in molds that are milled on computer-controlled machines. The finish of the outer shell panels is made of glass mosaic tiles. The Crescent forms the top of the Domes which is connected to a lightening protection and earthing system.
The Domes are built according to the highest international standards to serve a safe and mainly maintenance-free operation during all its lifetime. All materials and workmanship are to create a noble appearance and are suitable for the unique architecture of the Third Saudi Expansion of Makkah Holy Haram.
